Water Damage

Water damage describes various possible losses caused by water intruding where it will enable attack of a material or system by destructive processes such as rotting of wood, mold growth, bacteria growth, rusting of steel, swelling of composite woods, de-laminating of materials such as plywood, short-circuiting of electrical devices. In many cases where the damage is significant, entire portions of the house will need repairs and rebuilding. The leaking or standing water can seep into the drywall, subfloor, furniture, upholstery, carpeting, etc. Dampness in some cases cause spores leading to mold taking hold in the building. Left unchecked, harmful pathogens could flourish posing a risk to health. Sewage leaks are especially dangerous. Water can be the cause of rot in the underlying structure of the house, making it weak, and more susceptible to early collapse. Water damage can make a structure unsalvageable.

In the case of a water, parts of the structure may be completely unsalvageable during the initial assessment, and therefore have to be removed and replaced. This may include rebuilding and replacing the roof, replacing electrical, replacing and painting drywall, replacing flooring materials, replacing interior counters, fixtures, etc. to bring the property back to pre-loss condition.

Fire damage restoration is the process of returning a fire and smoke damaged property to pre-loss condition. Fire cleanup and restoration companies can take weeks or months due to the destructive nature of the disaster. Whereas where a water damage restoration company involves mitigating water and drying out the property — a task that can often be completed in days. Fire restoration process involves things like property board up, demolition and reconstruction on top of tasks such as debris, odor and soot removal, contents cleaning and working to remove any disturbed hazards such as lead and asbestos. It’s also worth noting that fire damage and water damage often occur concurrently. First, the property is doused with water while the fire department works to contain and extinguish the blaze. Sometimes, its pipes burst or melt during the fire, which leaks water into the structure.
